PPC or viral marketing?

I think that everyone knows what viral marketing is, it is to advertise your site on another blog by placing your link on their pages. This can be done by making a widget that is demandable by most bloggers, one that manage to make a success out of this is Dane Carlson. Another method to promote your site virally is to make a contest about your site. Almost every blogger nowadays are using this viral technique. This has been one of the best ways to gather some incoming links to your site.

Advantage:

The links could bring you some traffic

You will rank high on most search engines

This is a long time advertising, it means that it can still brings you traffic even if it is an old link

Doesn’t need to spend that much, most viral methods are just free.

Disadvantage

Too much viral marketing could be the cause of Google dropping your site on their database resulting to a low traffic

PPC advertising on the other hand has been used by most top gunners like John Chow and those site owners with capital. The key to have a successful campaign is choosing the right keyword.

Advantage

Your site will get traffic faster than a search engine could give you

Other might think that you are one of the top guns and will start following you

Disadvantage

If the campaign has run out of funds then they will not show your site anymore

Costly, the amount needed for a campaign is much greater than a contest

You decide

Both methods have its advantage and disadvantage. You have to know what best works for you. Remember that what works for somebody doesn’t really mean that it will work for you. Try to study your case. If you’re an establish blogger then you might consider on combining the two. If you’re just starting out then the problem arises because you have minimal budget to start up with. What methods d you believe will work for you?

Pay per click seems a bit more effective if used right but viral marketing has its place for sure. I need to use both.
